These are the flower patches I saw listed on other websites, but do n’t actually have flowers, so I can save you time.

  • Muller Ranch is listed on many websites, but I do n’t think they operate for the public anymore. They never got anything back after I gave them many phone calls and even left voicemails. We drove by and did n’t see a lot of fields. Do n’t come here.
  • My go-to pee break is at the Chevron gas station next to Pedrick ‘s, where one of my best friends lives. I like to stock up on local food at the market. At least once a month, I get to see the sunflowers near here.
  • I have seen this listed in many guides. There is a field next to Farmer John ‘s in Half Moon Bay. It ‘s a pumpkin patch. Someone did n’t know that this little field next door was a booming farm that offers sunflower tours. He is our favorite pumpkin and I encourage you to come back in October.

You can take a photograph at sunrise or sunset.

Plan to arrive at sunrise to avoid the rush of people. The sun is breaking the horizon and the sunflowers are all facing East. We left San Francisco at 1:45am and traveled to the fields for sunrise. The best time to shoot is in the morning.

You can visit at sunset in the evening if you do n’t want to drive all day. I highly recommend you do n’t take photos during the day. You will be out in the middle of a field in this area and it will be so hot that you will be sweating.

You should be respectful while visiting the sunflowers.

Most farmers are fine with you stopping by the end of the field for a quick photo shoot, but if you are planning on going deeper into fields or doing a big shoot ( like an engagement or longer portrait session or flying a drone ), figure out who owns the land and give them a call

I have not heard anyone say no, they just like the heads up for a professional photo shoot. Do n’t wander too deep into fields or drive all over the farm on private property and be respectable. The files are private.

These fields are not public land. Do n’t damage the flowers.

Do n’t use drones… for real. Droning is not allowed on private land. Farmers will call the cops. Unless you have permission.

Plan to wear summer dresses, straw hat or Americana-vibing outfits if you dress the part. Try one of these pieces!

Do n’t pick sunflowers, they are n’t yours, and do n’t bring fake ones to fields.

You can make a weekend trip out of it.

Light to photograph at sunrise and sunset is the best time to stay in a hotel in California. It ‘s time to make a weekend trip out of it.

You should stay overnight in Sacramento, a city that is slowly growing on me with fun breweries, cute cafes and colorful murals. The best hotel is the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel. Kimpton hotels are always unique and well crafted. If you want something a little more unique, try the Delta King Hotel which is a hotel on a river.

Araceli farms is a lavender field that is open between May and July each year. We visited this place this summer and fell in love with it. You can take a lot of photos here.

If you are in the area in February, you should check out the Almond Blossoms. The Mezger Family Zinnia Patch is close to August.

This will help you plan your trip to see the fields. Drop a note so everyone can see if you have any tips.

If you use # whimsysoul on your photo, I can see it!

I have a lot of sunflowers photos from over the years.
