Sunflowers | Dorothea Dix Park

The sunflowers are in full bloom. The field is usually in bloom for 2 weeks.

  • The historic cemetery and the former soccer fields are near the Sunflower Field.
  • From dawn untildusk, the field is free to visit.
  • There is a gravel lot offHunt Drive and a parking lot near the Magnolia Room.
  • Visitors are welcome to use any paved lot on weeknights and weekends.
  • You can take the park via the bikeway.

You should know before you go.

  • It is necessary to walk up and down hills, in grass and on even surfaces to see the sunflowers.
  • We recommend sunscreen, hats, bug spray and close-toed shoes.
  • Children and pets should stay on the paths in the field.
  • Do n’t pick the flowers!
  • Pets must be kept on a leash.
  • The Magnolia Room is located near the port-a-johns.
  • The Chapel has indoor restrooms during visitor hours.
  • Department of Health and Human Services employees work on the campus. All buildings and DHHS parking areas should be avoided during business hours.

Some parts of the park are not fully accessible for all mobility needs. There is a focus on accessibility for park improvements. You can learn more about the park.

Group and individuals with disabilities can safely drive the sunflowers loop with accessible vehicle viewing.

Professional photography.

All commercial film and photography in the City of Raleigh Park requires a permit. You can apply for a film permit through the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. What is n’t allowed.

  • Picking and cutting flowers.
  • Pets are off-leash.
  • Outside alcoholic beverages.
  • Vaping or smoking.
  • Weapons of any kind.
  • Littering.
  • There are drones or other aerial devices. These are only allowed on the Big Field.

There are facts about the park.

  • There is an effort between Raleigh Water, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources and the Office of Sustainability.
  • The field is prepared in the spring and the seeds are planted in May. 198,000 seeds were planted, which equates to 25 lbs of seed. Clearfield seeds are the variety planted. /li >
  • As the flowers grow, Raleigh Parks waters and maintains the field.
  • The sunflowers field is a huge habitat for bees. You can learn more about the Pollinator Protection Projects.
  • After the bloom is over, Raleigh Water harvests the sunflowers and processes them into biodiesel for educational programs and demonstrations.
