Six easy steps to draw a sunflower – The Kitchen Table Classroom

There are just six simple steps to follow along with this easy drawing. All you need is paper and pencil.

Why draw a flower ?

There is a special place in my heart for sunflowers. Is there a flower that is more cheerful ?

I am not the only one who loves sunflowers.Vincent Van Gogh painted them as a famous subject of one of his most famous paintings.

The flower of the Ukranian is the sunflowers. A display of drawings from the sunflowers would be a great way to show support.

The drawing materials…

This drawing lesson only requires paper and pencil. That does n’t get any simpler.

A quality eraser will make this pencil drawing and every other pencil drawing much easier. It is possible to erase guidelines without creating holes in your paper. The little guys are worth their weight in gold.

The subject of our drawing is a flower. You can use a real one, an artificial one, or even a picture online. As your kids draw, they should reference one of those things.

Let ‘s learn how to draw a flower.

Draw a large circle on your paper. The outer edge of the sunflowers is a circle. There is plenty of room for detail in the initial circles, so encourage your young artists to make them big.

It does n’t need to be a perfect circle and it does n’t need to be in the center of the paper Things that are imperfect are more interesting.

There is a second circle inside the first. The second and largest circle is a guide for the width of the petals.

These circles are not straight. The two circles share the same center. The second circle is a guide. It wo n’t be part of the final drawing so it ‘s best to draw it lightly.

Step two is drawing the petals.

The petals of the sunflowers stretch from the inner circle to the outer circle. Encourage your young artists to look at a sunflowers in person or online. The petals of the sunflowers are slightly different. Some may be torn, rolled, bent, or even missing.

Step three- more petals…

In order to draw a full and detailed sunflower, more petals are needed. There is a new row of petals behind the first row.

Only a small part of the second row will show due to the overlap of the two rows of petals. Encourage your kids to add as much detail to the second row of sunflowers as they did to the first row.

Drawing the stem and leaves is the fourth step.

A sturdy stem is needed to hold the big beautiful sunflowers up. A single line is not enough. Two parallel lines that are close to each other create a sturdy stem.

Take a look at the leaves on your real sunflower. You can add a leaf to your drawing. It will look more realistic if it overlaps the stem or goes behind the petals.

Adding texture to the center…

There are two circles in the center of the drawing. The outlines do n’t stay in the final drawing.

A variety of texture can be found in the center of a sunflowers. Put a different texture on each ring of the sunflowers center. The seeds can be seen in small circles or ovals that are closer to each other.

There is no right texture for your drawing. It ‘s important for your kids to know that any shape or line can be repeated to create a pattern.

Step six is to add value to your drawing.

Your students have learned how to draw a flower. The leaves and petals are defined by lines. This is a great time to remove guidelines and add value by shading with a pencil.

The value includes the dark color of a pencil. There is more information on value on this free one page document.

A sense of balance is what makes a composition pleasing to the eye. A balance of light and dark is one way to achieve that. You can add details, lines, and shadow.

The petals that are behind the other petals will be darker. Encourage your kids to use a pencil with light layers of value. Adding multiple layers of pencil will build darker values. It is more difficult to remove a harshly drawn line than it is to add a darker value.
