The common sunflower can reach heights of up to 10 feet. There is more to this plant than just its height. The many uses and characteristics of the various plant parts make it an appealing addition.

Structural support.

The roots and stalks of the plant are where the support system is located. The tall plant is an anchor because it has a tap root that can break through hard soil. Water and minerals are sent up through the stalks to the rest of the plant by the roots. The structure to house the leaves of the flower head is provided by the sturdy stalks. The plant has a system of channels that carry water, minerals and sugars. Once the blooms have finished their show, dried stalks can be used for feed.

Buds and leaves.

Large, green leaves are the main source of energy for the plant. The leaf blade has small hairs. The leaf is attached to the stalks by the petiole. A bud develops at the end of the stalks, turning to face the sun during the day. The flowers remain open to the east once the repositioning stops.

Disk flowers.

The flowers are known as Sunflowers. Many people refer to the large flower head at the top of the stalks as one flower, but it is actually hundreds of small flowers. There are five brown petals fused together into a tubular shape in the dark center of the disk flowers. The male and female are present in disk flowers. The stamen is composed of anthers. The style is able to travel down to the ovary because the unfertilized seeds are located in the stigma. The process of pollination allows the flowers to produce seeds. Humans and wildlife like to eat Sunflower seeds. The seeds can be replanted the following year to grow a new crop.

Ray flowers.

The petals of the flower are mistakenly referred to as the outer circle of the sunflowers head. These yellow pieces are ray flowers. They wo n’t produce seeds because they do n’t have reproductive parts. Ray flowers are more important in attracting pollinators to the disk flowers and providing the aesthetic appeal of the plant.
