Ingredient Spotlight: L-Arbutin and Daisy Flower

I thought it was a good time to take an in depth look at some of the next generation lighteners and brighteners being used in skin care.

Next-generation lighteners work with a wide range of skin types, making them an effective HQ alternative. They also provide support for the body and promote cell turnover. Bellis Perennis and L-Arbutin are two botanical lightening agents that we work with. The daisy flower is native to western, central and northern Europe. An interesting fact is that the center of a flower is a collection of small yellow flowers. Natural skin lightener derived from the blossoms of wild daisy flowers is considered a gentle, yet highly efficient natural skin care product. It was used by surgeons in ancient Rome for its astringent properties. Another effective natural skin lightener is L-Arbutin. It comes from the leaves of Bearberry Bush, which is grown in high latitudes like Scotland, Scandinavia, Russia, Alaska and Canada. The most common source of this ingredient is Bearberry. It is believed that L-Arbutin is a more stable and less sensitizing lightener than HQ. It was developed to block melanin formation without causing any of the potential side effects that have been linked to excessive use of HQ. Daisy Flower works by changing pathways involved in melanin formation, counteracting age spots and balancing hyperpigmentation. The active in Bellis Perennis blocks the binding and transfer of melanocytes. It reduces the production of melanin in the melanosomes. This powerful ingredient can reverse existing pigmentation issues. L-Arbutin corrects hyperpigmentation and reduces the appearance of dark spots. It works by blocking the production of melanin. The eumelanin and phaeomelanin are produced in certain cells in the skin. Tyrosinase forms in these melanocytes and when activated by UV light an enzymatic chemical reaction occurs called melanogeneses, which ultimately leads to the formation of melanins. This process is blocked by Arbutin. Arbutin is a faster, more efficient skin-lightening active than any existing single lightening ingredient. Many of our lightening and brightening formulas use powerful botanical ingredients.

Botanical brighteners are an amazing alternative for clients that may be leery of skin lightening programs. Do you talk to your clients about the differences between HQ and botanical lighteners ?
